Hammertoe surgery

At our podiatry center, we specialize in foot surgery. Claw toes or hammertoes are common deformities that can cause discomfort such as corns, calluses, pain, and inflammation. These issues can have various causes, making early evaluation crucial for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Claw toes or hammer toes refer to a series of deformities in the joints of the toes (except the big toe). In addition to the deformity, which develops gradually, other associated symptoms may include calluses or corns on the top or base of the toes, pain in the tip of the foot, or inflammation in the interphalangeal joints. These issues can arise from various causes, whether congenital, due to improper footwear, or other muscular or joint problems, such as a bunion or any injury that alters the bone structure of the foot. The more affected the joint, the more pronounced the deformity of the toe becomes; for this reason, it is crucial to visit your podiatry clinic to obtain a diagnosis as soon as possible.

What does hammertoe surgery involve?

These types of injuries can be addressed in the operating room in different ways: either with a traditional approach, known as open surgery, or with minimally invasive surgery. Before making a decision, our team of podiatric surgeons will perform various diagnostic tests to determine the best option for you. Both options are valid and are selected based on several factors such as the degree of deformity, the presence of arthritis in the joint, or the mobility of the toe joints, among others. Whether it’s open surgery or minimally invasive foot surgery, it is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. You will be able to go home the same day, using a special shoe that allows you to walk immediately.

What is the postoperative period like after hammertoe surgery?

Since it is an outpatient surgery, you can go home the same day without needing hospitalization. After 48 hours, we will conduct the first follow-up examination. With some rest, you should be able to return to your normal activities in about a month. At the Malats-Sant Andreu Podiatric Center, we understand the importance of keeping up with daily life. That’s why we strive to provide effective and swift solutions to your podiatric problems. Don’t hesitate—book your appointment now!
